SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL
Denbigh, Ruthin and District

The Club was formed in 1953 and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2003.

Our members come from a wide area around Denbigh and Ruthin, as well as the more rural areas of the Vale of Clwyd

We represent a variety of business and professional sectors, including finance, law, health, hospitality, public services, retail, farming and so on.

We are active, enthusiastic, friendly and fun-loving in our service and fund-raising activities

Regular club meetings are held on the first Monday of the month (unless this is a Bank Holiday, when we meet the following Monday). There is no meeting in August. The programme is a mixture of topical speakers, social and fund-raising events.

Our President for 2009/10 is Mrs Mary Steel. Mary studied Modern Languages in Cardiff and then had a teaching career in the UK and in Nigeria. Before her recent retirement, she was Head of a girls' school and also a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio. She still enjoys speaking to a variety of organisations across the country.

In former days Mary sailed as a mate with the Ocean Youth Club, teaching young people to sail in ocean going yachts. She is currently President of Girlguiding Clwyd and hopes to introduce young women to the ideals and vision of Soroptimism.

Mary says "I hope that our club will continue to thrive and enjoy our usual wide variety of social and service events. As well as supporting Project Sierra, we hope to raise funds for Cruse Bereavement Care and Marie Curie Cancer Care"
